All the Things Right and Wrong with Young Adult Movies #Day8
Call it guilty pleasure or just my disinterest in trying new things, Young Adult movies, hands down, remains my favourite genre of movies. In my opinion, after having had a rough or a busy day, it is best to watch something light hearted and entertaining with some drama in it to make it engaging and so YA seems to be the genre that fulfills it all.
But also, like everything else in this world, this genre does have its flaws and so today, I will be listing 3 things right and 3 things wrong with Young Adult Movies.
The Pros :
(1) Gives you hope and has a feel good touch to it : Whether it is the romantic angle of the movie or the chemistry between the best friends, YA movies give you a new ray of optimism in your life. Every YA movie, irrespective of what type of movie is it, ends with a feeling of hope, for a better future and a possible "happily ever after".
(2) Covers a lot of other aspects other than the regular old rom-coms : Although the general perception is that young adult means teen romance, but mind you, that's not true. Young adult movies cover a wider range of subgenres and genres like thriller, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, dystopia, adventure and so on. For instance popular movies like the Harry Potter franchise and Percy Jackson series fall under the fantasy genre too.
(3) Teaches lessons which are relatable: If there are moral stories for children, then there is the genre of young adult for teenagers. Although the main motive of these movies is not to give out morals and preachings, they do subtly give a perspective and a way of thought to teenagers in some way or the other.
PS : However, I feel this can both be a pro or con depending upon the movies that are made and the movies we watch and so, it is necessary that we assess every movie before we watch it.
The Cons
(1) Unrealistic situations : Your best friend living thousands of miles away coming all of a sudden to meet you to give you a surprise, people around you easily getting into Yale and Harvard, having the most attractive significant other at the age of 16? Only a YA movie could make all of this come true and sometimes these moments make us compare our lives to these movies leading to high expectations and thus disappointments.
But the good part is that we get to live that life for a short while by watching these movies, right?
(2) The Mean Girls, the Nerd, the Jock, etc etc: No, a nerd does NOT always wear glasses and is NOT always unpopular and no, the mean girls are NOT always the "unintelligent" ones. One thing which really puts me off in some of these YA movies are these stereotypes.
Nevertheless it's good to know these stereotypes are being shelved in YA movies and they are evolving with the audience!
(3) Repetitive plots : An unpopular/unconventional protagonist deal with a very "unexpected" twist in their life -- well that is pretty much every YA movie ;P It's high time that we have some more originality in the storyline instead of going by this same pattern every time.
But to all the YA lovers, please do not be offended. As I stated before, Young Adult movies have to remain my absolute favourite. Plots repetitive or not, I enjoy them regardless. But still, there is always scope for betterment in things and so is the case with movies.
And that was my take on Young Adult movies! What do you like/dislike about these movies? Type in the comments down below!
