Ways to Boost Your Vocabulary! #Day12

Well before you start having some thoughts, I might as well clear them up beforehand. I agree that I might not be an English enthusiast or an English tutor and this is not even a "Learn to Speak English" blog. In fact, I am just a learner and a normal non-native English speaker.

However, speaking English or any other language is essential for effective communication and I being a part of this ever growing internet community wish to pass my experiences on.

Okay so throughout my journey of learning English until now, one thing which has bothered me a lot in the past is learning new vocabulary and with that struggle came a whole lot of advices and tips which came my way - only a few of which actually worked and they worked well!

So here are a few things that you should do to improve your vocabulary and learn new words in a non-boring way!

(1) Guess meanings of words while you read: This must always be the thumb rule while reading a novel, a newspaper or articles on the internet. Always avoid looking up words from a dictionary if you can guess their meanings from the context. This practice not only helps in brain development but also helps us in remembering these words better than when we look them up in a dictionary.

(2) Think in English (or any other language that you wish to improve upon): A major mistake we all make as non-native speakers is that we try to translate everything we read into our native languages but let me tell you that this cannot work on a long term basis if you wish to improve in the language. If you wish to boost your vocabulary and fluency, you must start building your thoughts in it. This makes learning the language more of a natural process rather than something you are consciously trying to do which requires much more effort too.

(3) Do not shy away from making errors: What we as a society need to realise is that people are bound to make errors while learning and nobody is an absolute expert here. The norm of trolling someone about using the wrong vocabulary or having poor grammar must be stopped.
Meanwhile, we as learners, must not be embarrassed by these comments and embrace the possibility of us making errors every now and then. Just correct them, learn from them and move on. Remember:

Mistakes have the power to turn you into something better than you were before.
